Planning A Disney Trip During Hurricane Season

So traveling during Hurricane season to Walt Disney World isn’t a bad idea. We want to start off by saying that. Hurricane season is September, and September means a lot of great things – it means the start of Food and Wine Festival, it means lower crowds, it means free dining, and it also means Mickey’s Not So Scary Parties. We love September at Disney. But September is also the thick of Florida hurricane season, so if you’re planning a trip during this time, there’s a few things we think you need to keep in mind.

Be Flexible
Growing up, I was always taught by my pastors and youth leaders in high school, that ‘blessed are the flexible, for they will never break. That might sound cheesy, but it’s huge to remember during hurricane season. It’s for sure heartbreaking to have to change your vacation plans because of a hurricane – but it’s less heartbreaking that the devastation the hurricane is bringing to people’s practical lives. Flexibility is your friend during hurricane season.

Be Kind
Kindness goes a long way in life, but especially during a storm. Chances are, that you’ll plan a trip during hurricane season and a hurricane WON’T happen. But if it does, and you get stuck on the phone for hours and hours, kindness goes a long way.

Be Willing To Reschedule
We always encourage people to have a set up back-up dates that WOULD work, that they could move their trips to, just in case the worst happens. You’ll have way more peace of mind, if you have the option of moving your trip to another date, if you start watching the weather and a hurricane is moving in.

Keep CMs In Mind
Cast Members are national treasures. They’re kind, they’re accommodating, they’re service orientated. You never know when they’re having a rough day, or personal problems. They’re the best among us. So when a hurricane hits, and they have to work, to ride out the storm, and help ensure that guests are safe, and secure, take the extra time to be a little more kind and gracious than normal. I’m sure, if I was a cast member, I would want to be at home with my family and loved ones – the extra kindness counts.

ALWAYS Pack Rain Gear
If you go during hurricane season, and there’s no hurricane, you will still most likely get rain – so we ALWAYS recommend packing rain gear. We’re never in the parks without a raincoat and an umbrella.

These are our top tips for planning a trip during hurricane season. Again, we think it’s a great time of year to go, as long as you have some of these things in mind.
