Why We’re Releasing Our ‘Dumbledore’s Army’ Shirt

I’m not a big voice. I don’t have my own talk show, or a Kardashian level instagram following. But does that make it any less my responsibility to use whatever platform I do have? There’s a great quote from one of my favorite books, ‘The Hate U Give’ that says ‘What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?’. I’ve thought about that a lot lately, as I’ve mulled over the thought of writing this blog.

I love Harry Potter. I love the thought that when young people saw something that was wrong, they mobilized, and did something. They stood up, and made a difference. They formed Dumbledore’s Army, and decided to fight evil, even though they were young, and no one thought that they could make a bit of difference. But then, at the battle of Hogwarts, it was them – the young people, the students, who stayed behind with The Order of The Phoenix to fight the Death Eaters. I know you might be thinking – SO WHAT. IT’S JUST A BOOK SERIES. And that’s totally true. But 2018 is real, and someday, when my kids ask me what I did, I don’t want to tell them that I just sent a bunch of strongly worded tweets.

So, here we are, and we’ve decided to put out a ‘Dumbledore’s Army – Join the Resistance’ Shirt. 15% of the profits are going to go to RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees in Texas. We’ve chosen this organization, because they’ve been on the forefront of helping reunite immigrant parents that have been separated from their children.

So get a shirt. Rep your Hogwarts house colors. Join Dumbledore’s Army. Join the resistance.
